Amkor Technology’s China facilities, located in Pudong, Shanghai, provide assembly and testing of IC components for cell phones, personal computers, and other consumer products, for both the domestic China market and for export.

Recognizing that China is becoming a major center for advanced microelectronics, in 2001 Amkor broadened our operations base to include our first semiconductor assembly and test manufacturing facility in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, Pudong, Shanghai.

Our Shanghai factories provides Amkor and our worldwide customers the means to provide local content to China, granting access to meet demand in a dynamic and growing marketplace. In 2004, Amkor acquired a second, much larger site in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone which will allow us to grow in China for years to come. This new site will encompass nearly one million square feet and be ready for occupancy in 2006.

Shanghai is both the major hub for manufacturing companies in China, and one of the world's top ten busiest ports. In fact, it is quickly becoming known as the "Silicon Valley" of China. Shanghai is an international, high tech, and cultural metropolis, with an infrastructure well suited for hi-tech manufacturing.

Amkor has selected the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone for our first and second China factories. The Free Trade Zone (FTZ) offers excellent manufacturing infrastructure, familiarity with the needs of high technology firms, a highly educated work force and an understanding of international business needs, enabling Amkor to provide maximum benefits to our customers. Waigaoqiao ranked first in China in 2005 in terms of imports and exports passing through its bonded FTZ.

The Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone occupies 10 square kilometers in the northeast corner of Pudong, next to the Yangtze River. Waigaoqiao's infrastructure is designed for international trade. Currently, Waigaoqiao is home to more than 7000 companies, which have brought in a large overseas investment.

Most of the foreign companies in this area are from the U.S., Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore. Many of these are semiconductor companies (e.g., Hewlett-Packard, Intel, IBM, Lucent, Ricoh, Rockwell, TI, and Philips) but the FTZ also includes such companies such as GE, 3M, Compaq, Sun, Corning, and Sumitomo.

The Free Trade Zone is well equipped with a bonded logistics warehouse area, administration and export processing zones, and a residential area. By capitalizing on strong relationships with local authorities, this high-tech park provides excellent assistance in licensing, taxation and other customer issues such as tariff questions and an expedited customs process. Amkor has established an excellent working relationship with local governmental authorities.

Our business license is very flexible and allows Amkor to support both local and international markets. The license also authorizes Amkor to act as a local distribution company.

In 2005 Amkor established a package design capability, and we also plan to establish R&D activities in Waigaoqiao, further expanding the range of services Amkor will offer at this facility.

Our Class 10K clean room facility is a model factory, complete with IC assembly and test equipment. ATC is ISO-14001, ISO-9002, QS-9000, ISO-9001 and TS16949 certified. Our 170,000 square foot facility offers a range of laminate and leadframe packages, including Chip Scale BGA, Stacked packages, Flip Chip packaging, MicroLeadFrame^®, MCM-PBGA, PBGA, SOIC, LQFP, and TSOP. We are also one of the few assembly and test service companies in the world to specialize in RF testing and wafer probe, which is also available at our facility in Waigaoqiao.

Amkor has established a supply chain to ensure that a supply of raw materials and equipment is available on a moment's notice. Strong support and cooperation from local authorities concerning licensing, taxation and customs issues, enables Amkor to proactively address material and equipment supply concerns before they affect our customers.

The facility also has integrated Camstar System's InSite manufacturing tracking and execution system to ensure the availability of up-to-the-minute information about work in progress. The system enables plant managers to keep statistical process control of everything on the factory floor, including the history and genealogy of the products it tracks. The system provides real-time data on location and control of customer products, from raw material to finished product.

Amkor is dedicated to producing the fastest, thinnest, and most powerful Ball Grid Array (BGA) IC packaging in microelectronics industry. Our BGA package family provides outstanding thermal, electrical, SMT and I/O performance advantages. It is the ideal choice for high and low pin count devices including microprocessors, memory, DSPs, amplifiers, gate arrays and ASICs.

Amkor's Waigaoqiao facility is targeting high technology markets, including mobile phones, hand-held devices, personal computers and other consumer products. We are supporting a broad range of applications:

Amkor provides complete turn-key assembly and test services. Our test capabilities include logic, mixed signal, memory, and RF test. Amkor brings to our Waigaoqiao factory the expertise to assemble, test, handle, pack, and ship to our customers’ end markets as required.
