Part of Amkor's Broader 'Green' Initiatives in IC Packaging
CHANDLER, Ariz., Jan. 12 -- Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR) has received "green partner" status from Sony Corporation, a program that ensures consumer products and the components inside are environmentally friendly. This qualification is valid for all ten Amkor factories in Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, and China.
The sited qualification process involved each factory's environment control management to ensure that Amkor's packaging solutions do not contain specified levels or controlled less than required levels of potential environmental pollutants, such as lead and halides. This latest qualification is part of Amkor's on-going actions to address the complexities of environmentally friendly packaging. Since initiating its "green" program about four years ago, Amkor has qualified more than 50 customers with various lead-free, RoHS compliant, and fully "green" packages. (RoHS is Europe's Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive.) During 2003 Amkor shipped more than 75 million "green" packages.
"Passing the green partner audit means that Amkor's ongoing environmental control management effort is well recognized," said Bruce Freyman, Amkor's executive vice president of operations. "Lead is certainly on the way out of the electronics industry. The Japanese consumer markets and environmental regulations in the European Union are driving this demand for environmentally friendlier products."
Initial efforts on "green" packaging sought to replace lead used in solder balls with lead-free metal alloys. These efforts now extend to the elimination of lead and brominated flame retardants in plastics, molding compounds, and some substrate core materials. The halide bromine is also used in solder mask inks. "The challenge has been to replace them with green materials that are able to withstand higher temperatures because most alloys used to replace lead have a higher melting point, and thus require higher temperatures during the assembly process," said Freyman. "Amkor is well positioned for increasing its 'green' conversions in 2004 and 2005."
